About the Sea lamprey genome

Assembly

sea lamprey - close-up of mouth This site displays the preliminary (21 Feb 2007) 5.9X assembly of the sea lamprey genome. The analysis was carried out at the Genome Sequencing Center at Washington University, in collaboration with the California Institute of Technology. Lampreys are primitive vertebrates with a soft cartilaginous skeleton, and have a circular, jawless mouth with which they attach themselves to their prey (see picture, left).

The present assembly consists principally of a series of small, unlinked contigs, the result of fosmid pairs having one end in the assembly and the other end in repeats, so the fosmid, useful for scaffolding, is eliminated from the assembly. There are 310.811 contigs in total, averaging 2676 BP in length.

Annotation

This preview site includes some EST and cDNA alignments, but protein evidence has not yet been included. A full Ensembl genebuild will be released in due course.
